U.S. House passes Arizona-inspired law to protect victims
The U.S. House unanimously passed a bill to safeguard victims from their abusers. Kayleigh’s Law Act of 2026, which first started as a state law in Arizona in 2022, is an attempt to give victims of federal sex crimes and violent felonies lifetime protection against their convicted abusers. If the bill became a federal law, courts throughout the U.S. would be required to issue permanent no-contact injunctions against convicted offenders. By Zachery Schmidt.

Arizona Supreme Court hears case over forced DEI training
The Arizona Supreme Court recently heard arguments in a DEI case that could have a widespread impact on state workers. The Phoenix-based court will determine if Arizona State University professor Owen Anderson has legal standing to sue the Arizona Board of Regents after being required to attend diversity, equity and inclusion training courses by his employer. House Dems block constitutional amendment capping SCOTUS to nine justices

The 212-206 vote, which also saw eight Democrats abstain from voting, failed to reach the two-thirds requirement for passage under suspension of the rules, a process that fast-tracks bills.

VVP AI FRAUD: Sixty percent of voters say artificial intelligence should be used to help detect fraud, waste, or abuse in government programs such as Medicaid, while 27% oppose it, according to The Center Square's latest Voters' Voice Poll. SANCTUARY BILLS: Congressional Republicans have introduced dozens of bills since January 2025 challenging sanctuary policies. Most have been referred to committees and seen no further action, despite Republican control of Congress and GOP-led committees holding at least nine hearings on the issue over the same period.

FUNDING SURVEILLANCE: A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the FLOCK OFF Act, which would prohibit the use of taxpayers dollars for all Automatic License Plate Readers and other surveillance cameras that collect and store biometric data, including Flock cameras. It provides an exception, however, for cameras used by U.S. Border Patrol or for toll collection. (Therese Boudreaux)
