California attorney general: Trump can't interfere with voting
California Attorney General Rob Bonta stands by a lawsuit he’s co-leading to stop President Donald Trump's executive order on mail-in ballots. Trump has made it his mission to keep noncitizens from voting in federal elections, but Bonta, who responded to The Center Square’s questions Thursday at a virtual press conference, says Trump is interfering with states’ constitutional power to run elections. A think tank representative, though, told The Center Square that he sees no problem with a U.S. Postal Service rule that implements Trump’s order. Arizona is among the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Local woman faces fines, legal action for serving free breakfast at home
A local Missouri health department has told Kathy Kite, a grandmother who serves free breakfast to her neighbors from her home, that she will face legal action if she continues doing so without a permit. That letter came in July, and Kite has continued to serve breakfast since. The Goldwater Institute, a Phoenix think tank, has taken up her cause. “Citizens should not be required to get the government’s permission before offering passers-by some coffee and a bite to eat while they socialize,” Dave Roland, the Institute’s Director of Allied Litigation, told The Center Square. Poll: Majority of voters concerned with rise of socialism, communism
A slew of candidates running as democratic socialists appears to be raising alarms with a majority of American voters, according to a new poll. The Center Square’s Voters Voice Poll found 63% of Americans are concerned with the growth of socialism or communism in American politics, while 29% are not concerned. Heading into the midterm elections in November, Republicans and several Democratic voices have warned against democratic socialists rising to power across the country.

Trump signs executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday afternoon changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. The change, which the president said takes effect “immediately,” comes after the president toyed with the idea amid trade tensions with Canada.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent accused of shooting into a Minnesota home was released from a jail in Texas Thursday after a federal judge refused to extradite him to Minnesota. 

One year later: Remembering the Annunciation School shooting
It’s been one year since a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis claimed the lives of two children. On Thursday morning, church bells could be heard ringing across the city at 8:26 a.m. to honor 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel, 10-year-old Harper Moyski, and the more than 20 others who were injured.
