'Treated like a criminal:' Witnesses testify on abuse of Flock cameras
Advocates of the growing network of AI-driven surveillance cameras argue the technology can help make communities across the U.S. safer. But the controversial cameras have also wreaked havoc on the lives of innocent American citizens, including Florida resident Lindsey Isaacs, who spent 13 days in jail and received severe media attention for a crime she didn’t commit. Isaacs told her story to U.S. lawmakers during a Wednesday Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism hearing in Washington, D.C. China lags on $17B farm pledge as Xi visit nears tariff deadline
China remains behind on its May pledge to buy U.S. farm goods as President Donald Trump hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping, with a trade truce set to expire Nov. 10. The talks could decide whether suspended higher tariffs on some Chinese imports take effect, whether U.S. farmers see the sales Beijing promised and whether the two countries extend the one-year truce they reached last fall. 

'Shield of Americas' formed to target cartels in Western Hemisphere
A new international coalition of 14 countries, the “Shield of the Americas,” has been formed to target cartels and transnational crime in the Western Hemisphere. The governments of the United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago have all signed a Memorandum of Understanding to target transnational crime, the U.S. State Department said when announcing the new coalition. It’s the first joint action they’ve taken “to confront the scourge of narco-terrorism” and their shared goal is to target 24 international criminal organizations, some of which have been designated as foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs) in the U.S.

Fresh off President Donald Trump’s address before the UN’s General Assembly Tuesday, the president is scheduled to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping Wednesday evening.

MARICOPA COUNTY OVERSIGHT: A federal judge ruled against ending the federal oversight of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. K-12 TECH: As more states take steps to revise AI and tech/phone use in K-12 classrooms, the U.S. Department of Education issued guidance urging schools to use classroom technology based on instructional value and student outcomes while maintaining a human-centered approach to teaching. The Center Square will look at the national trends of phone policies across the country and what education analysts think about the subject since public education is taxpayer-funded.
