Inflation remains the issue American voters rank as most important heading into the midterms, with prices topping their list of concerns for a third consecutive poll, according to The Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll. 

Trade analyst: Tariffs cost Americans $200 billion a year, add $147 to school supplies
Tariffs will cost Americans about $200 billion per year, according to the National Taxpayers Union, and school supplies aren’t exempt from the heightened costs getting passed on to the American consumer.  As summer winds down and students head back to the classroom, parents are paying more to fill their carts with notebooks, backpacks and other school supplies – about $147 more, according to one trade analyst.

Trump announces the establishment of a Space Force Academy
While visiting the Johnson Space Cente Friday, President Donald Trump announced and signed an executive order to establish the Space Force Academy. The Space Force, first established by Trump in 2019 during his first administration, is the newest military branch and consists of approximately 9,400 active duty Guardians.

Warsh calls for a ‘quieter’ Fed focused on reducing inflation
Americans need a “quieter” Federal Reserve focused on bringing down 65 months of “sustained elevated inflation,” the central bank’s chair told attendees of the annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on Friday.

Mines cleared from Strait of Hormuz; more oil flowing
All mines have been cleared from the Strait of Hormuz as the U.S. continues to enforce a full naval blockade on Iran. U.S. Central Command Commander Bradley Cooper said the U.S. military has “successfully cleared sea mines” in the Strait of Hormuz, within the international shipping lanes that “were laid months ago by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.”

Everyday Economics: Strong on average, carried by a few
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh used his first Jackson Hole speech to make his position plain: the economy is strong, the labor market is stable, and inflation is still the problem that deserves the Fed’s attention. On the substance, he is half right – but the missing half is the part that matters.

GRAND CANYON FLOODS: Fifteen people remain missing after Sunday’s flash floods in the Grand Canyons, which involved the rescues of dozens of people. One person was killed. Torrential thunderstorms continued on Monday. The Grand Canyon National Park is seeking help to find hikers in areas with poor or no cellphone service. By Chris Woodward.

PILOT PROGRAM ON EVICTIONS: Maricopa County, home to Phoenix, launched its pilot program attempting to help households facing eviction.The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors allocated $800,000 for the Eviction Prevention Pilot Program in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. By Zachery Schmidt.

VVP ANTISEMITISM: A majority of American voters think antisemitism is on the rise compared to a few years ago, according to The Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll.

DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM: American voters are still uncertain about the rise of Democratic Socialist candidates. Even though the majority of Democratic voters believe the shift is a mostly positive change, a significant handful are alarmed or still unsure. (Therese Boudreaux)
